Louis J. Van Orden Jr., “Luke,” 88, of Little Compton passed away peacefully on Friday, May 25, 2012, at St. Elizabeth's Home in East Greenwich where he had lived for the past year. He was a US Army veteran.
Born in Montclair, NJ, a son of the late Louis Jackson Van Orden, Sr. and Katharine Armitage.
He is survived by his daughters Katharine V Stark of Warwick and Deborah Van Orden-Smith of Marengo, Ill., and their husbands, his step-son William Maude of Cranston and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy (Allen), his wife Suzanne (Fleet), and his wife Margaret "Gubby" (Hanley), and by his daughter Lisa, and step-daughter Cynthia Sherman.
Luke was an original member of the Sakonnet Peace Alliance and he attended their weekly vigils on Sunday mornings as often as he could. An avid golfer, and bridge and tennis player, he was a long time member of the Sakonnet Golf Club, the Warren's Point Beach Club, the Society of Colonial Wars and The Holland Society of New York.
He was a graduate in the Class of `42 at Hotchkiss and the Class of `46 at Dartmouth College. He retired as president of the American Emory Wheel Works, Providence. In 2006, Luke left this message for all who loved him, "I'm expecting to be around for a few more years at least. If the unexpected should happen, you can rest easy that I have enjoyed a really great life, three great marriages, wonderful loving children and grandchildren plus a happy retirement. What more could anyone ever want?"
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Luke's life will take place on Saturday, June 2, from 3-5 p.m. at the home of Henry and Kathy Hanley, 36 South of Commons Road in Little Compton. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the L.J. Van Orden Fund at the RI Foundation, One Union Station, Providence, RI 02903.
